10 Tips for a Stand-Out Open House
When your home is on the market, and your real estate agent schedules an open house, there are several things you can do to make your home and your open house stand out from the competition.
"A little something extra can make all the difference," said Laguna Beach interior designer Deborah Mucillo, who is frequently called upon as an open house consultant.
Here are Mucillo's top ten tips for making your open house something special:
-Use a real red carpet on the steps or pathway to the house or use bunches of eye-catching balloons to mark the entrance.
-Ask a local home store to glamorize your dining room with a unique table setting, or your bedroom and bath with fabulous linens, in return for some discreet signage.
-Invite a local caterer to present quickie cooking demos to your visitors. This will show off a gourmet kitchen and lend an unforgettably festive air to your open house.
-Make the house seem more like 'theirs' by removing your family photos and personal mementos in favor of more generic d cor.
-Tout the neighborhood, providing a bound list of notable or favorite area restaurants, clubs, schools, shops and entertainment venues.
-Prominently display recent disclosures or inspection results, such as just-completed paint or plumbing upgrades, termite inspection, etc.
-In addition to sprucing up the house, don't forget to remove the clutter and organize items in the garage.
-Since you don't know who may have pet allergies, or simply a dislike for animals in general, be sure even the cutest pups or kitties - and their paraphernalia are away from home during the open house.
-Help with advertising by posting open house notices in your clubhouse, at school and in the local supermarket.
-Safety is paramount, so lock away all valuables and be sure that keys, prescription medicines and other identifying documents are not around.
